She turned around and saw a man filling a black hackney cab.

The woman, 20, ignored the man and continued on her journey.

Kids rewarded with trip to Merseyside police dog section

School children who reunited a woman with her lost dog after feeding it their packed lunch have been rewarded this week with a visit to the police dogs! The six Year 7 pupils from Calderstones High School handed ‘Levi’ into officers based at Allerton police station after finding it eating from a bin on their way to school.

One of them gave the hungry black Setter, which had been missing for two days, his chicken and barbecue sauce sandwich while some of the others went to a nearby pet shop to buy more food with their dinner money.

An off-duty police call handler spotted them and recognised the dog and when she called a friend who was walking her own dog in Calderstones Park, they happened to be with the missing dog’s owner who was frantically searching for it.

After Levi and his owner were happily reunited that same morning (Tuesday 7th January 2013), the children called their teacher to explain why they would be late for PE and Allerton neighbourhood inspector, Andy Wignall, then wrote to the headteacher praising the pupils and inviting them to Mather Avenue training academy to watch the police dogs being put through their paces.

Inspector Wignall said: “What these boys and girls did was absolutely lovely and it is heartwarming to see young people from the local area being so caring about an animal. They would not have known how long Levi had been missing but spotted that he was hungry and had a collar on. It was Levi’s lucky day as not only was he found by such a lovely bunch of kids but he also got a chicken and barbecue sauce sandwich, which most of us would probably enjoy ourselves!

“While they were outside the police station an off duty colleague of mine stopped to help them and luckily she recognised the dog. A short phone call later and dog and owner were happily re-united!

“The children showed great initiative in looking after Levi as he could have got himself knocked over by a car if he had continued to wander. They are an absolute credit to their families and their school and are clearly animal-lovers so as a reward, we arranged for them to visit our dog section to meet our own dogs and see how they are trained.”

Their teacher, Miss Edwards said after the police visit: “The pupils and myself thoroughly enjoyed the morning at the police dog training centre. They loved meeting the dog trainer and his dog Arnie as well as trying on all the equipment and putting the police lights on.

“Everyone loved meeting the horses and learning about what they are used us. All the pupils felt really welcome and it was a great experience for them to understand how the police help their local community. Some even mentioned that they would like to be police officers in the future!
“They said that it was an ‘amazing day’, a ‘fantastic opportunity’ and they ‘would never forget it’!”

Merseyside Police Issued Warning To Students And Clubbers After Three People Collapse

Merseyside Police is issuing a warning to young people and students after three people were taken to hospital this morning (Sunday, 16 February, 2014) in a criticial condition after taking a substance believed to be known as GEEBS.

Officers were called to student accommodation at Bordens Court, Liverpool city centre, at about 7.30am following reports of a concern for safety for three people who had collapsed in a communal area of the building.

On arrival officers found three people, two men aged 20 years from Kensington and 22 years from Huyton, and a female aged 16 years from Clubmoor, who were being tended to by paramedics. All three were taken to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital where they were placed in intensive care. The conditions of all three have improved significantly during the day and the 20-year-old man has now been discharged from hospital.

Although the investigation is in its early stages officers believe that the two men and the teenager had been to a party in Lawrence Road, Wavertree, and a number of clubs in the city centre prior to returning to the accommodation at Borden Court where they collapsed.

Officers have cordoned off the accommodation at Borden Court and the property at Lawrence Road and searches of both properties are ongoing.

Detective Superintendent Chris Green, said: “As a result of our investigations we believe that the three people who collapsed in Borden Court this morning had taken a product called GEEBS, which is actually a chemical used to clean alloy wheels and is used as a legal high.

“We have consulted with the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and established that if taken this substance can have side effects, but at the end of the day this substance is a chemical used to clean car wheels and even in small doses can kill.”

He added: “We believe that the three people who are currently in hospital had been to a number of clubs in the city and a party in Lawrence Road, Wavertree before they returned to Borden Court.

“We have spoken to a number of people who were at the party at Lawrence Road but we know that there were other people who were at the party and we would like them to come forward for two reasons. The first to check that they are safe and well and secondly to see if they have any information which could help us with our inquiries.”

“We will be working with universities in the city in the coming days to warn students about the dangers that drugs and chemicals can have when taken, particularly if mixed with alcohol, or other substances.

“We understand that the three people involved may have taken other substances and as a precaution checks are underway to establish what those drugs were and to ensure that they have not taken drugs that are part of a bad batch.”

Anyone who was at the party in Lawrence Road, or who has any information which could help the police with their inquiries can contact detectives at St Anne Street police station on 0151 777 6064, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

He is later seen just before 1.20am on CCTV on Ripponden Road just 300 meters from his home address. Sadly his death appears to be the result of a tragic set of circumstances.

A man has been sentenced for raping an 18-year-old woman.

Today, Thursday 20 February 2014, Christopher Holmes (born 19/04/1969) of The Edge, off Clowes Street, Trinity, Salford was sentenced to six years in prison. He was found guilty of rape at an earlier hearing.

On 5 August 2012, an 18-year-old woman had travelled to Manchester with friends for a night out which brought them to the Bijou night club on Chapel Street.

The woman left the nightclub with Holmes, who she had not met before, and walked to his apartment nearby on the premise of a party. Once at the apartment she became unwell. At some point in the early hours Holmes restrained her to a bed by her ankles and raped her.

The woman awoke in the morning to find herself naked with her ankles still restrained. He loosened the ankle restraints and called her a taxi before she left the apartment and contacted police.

Detective Constable Emmett from the Serious Sexual Offences Unit said: “This was a particularly distressing situation for the young woman as she cannot remember going to Holmes’ apartment. Holmes preyed on the vulnerability of this young woman and carried out a wicked act to satisfy his own needs. She awoke in the morning extremely confused and frightened not knowing exactly what had happened to her.

“I would like to commend the victim on her bravery throughout the investigation and trial. I hope this conviction brings some comfort to her and her family.

“We treat rape and sexual assault extremely seriously and would urge anyone who has been a victim, under any circumstances, to come forward and speak to police.

“We work closely with St Mary’s Sexual Assault Referral Centre in Manchester to give victims the support they need.”

Revellers to be given helping hand in Widnes

$

Going out for a night on the town is something many people do on a regular basis. The scene is similar most Friday and Saturday nights across the county, people enjoying themselves, young women tottering around on heels that were a good idea when they first left the house. As the night progresses and it’s time to go home, some people need a little helping hand.

That’s one of the reasons why John Dwyer, Police & Crime Commissioner for Cheshire has awarded the Widnes Street Pastors £3,000 from his Crime Prevention Fund to help reduce alcohol-related anti-social behaviour in the town.

John Dwyer said: “I’ve seen the valuable work street pastors do around the county. They help revellers who’ve had too much to drink, by offering them water to hydrate them. They even offer flip-flops to women, who’ve taken their killer heels off because their feet are sore, preventing them from getting hurt.”

Raymond Roberts, from Widnes Street Pastors said: “Widnes Street Pastors are very grateful to Police & Crime Commissioner John Dwyer for his kind donation. This money will enable us not only to continue our current work of helping vulnerable people late on a Saturday night in Widnes, but will also allow us to recruit and train new members to join our team.”

John added: “Another advantage of street pastors is that they free up police officer time as well. During one shift with them, I observed as they assisted officers who had found a drunken reveller passed out in a doorway. The pastors stayed with this person till help arrived, freeing the officers up to deal with other issues that had arisen.”

Thief uses handwritten note to rob bank – Bury

A thief robbed a bank in Bury after pressing a handwritten note claiming he had a gun against the cashier’s window.

The man brazenly walked in the Co-Operative Bank at The Rock, Bury, at about 4.50pm on 19 February 2014.

He approached the cashier’s desk where he pulled out an A5 sized piece of paper on which was written the words ‘GIVE ME YOUR MONEY. I HAVE A GUN.’

Fearing she would be attacked and harmed, the cashier gave the thief some money and he then walked off.

Inquiries have established he got into a nearby taxi and was dropped off in the Tweedale Street area of Rochdale.

Police have now released a CCTV still of the man who is described as being white, in his early 20s, of a pale and spotty complexion, a thin build, 6ft tall, with dark eyes and wearing a dark top.

Detective Sergeant Ian Partington said: “Although no weapon was physically seen, if you try and put yourselves in the shoes of the cashier, you can begin to imagine how frightened she must have been to see this note pressed against her window.

“Clearly the offender had planned what he was going to do and had written out a note with the sole intention of using the threat of a weapon to scare the woman into giving him money.

“That makes him both a desperate and potentially dangerous man, and we need to find him as soon as possible.

“We know this man got into a taxi and was driven to the Tweedale Street area in Rochdale, so I would appeal to people to look closely at this image. It may be this man lives either in the Bury or Rochdale areas and if you recognise this man, then please come forward. The CCTV still we have issued is of excellent quality so I’m sure someone will recognise him.”

Teenager sentenced for causing death by dangerous drivin

A teenager has been sentenced for causing the death of two women by dangerous driving.

Michael Gilligan, of Nantwich Road, Wimboldsley, was sentenced to 6 years imprisonment. He was also disqualified from driving for a period of 7 years and was ordered to take an extended re-test.

The 19-year-old was sentenced at Chester Crown Court on Wednesday (19 February) after having pleaded guilty at a previous hearing.

The incident took place late on Tuesday 18 June 2013. The victims − Christine Coates, aged 75 years, and Barbara Lea, aged 79 − were travelling together in a Honda Jazz along the A533 Booth Lane at Moston heading towards Sandbach.

Gilligan was driving a black Vauxhall Astra and was shown to be on the wrong side of the road as he entered a bend colliding with their car. At the time he was travelling at over 50 mph.

Sergeant Andy Dennison said: “This case highlights the devastation that is caused when people take risks when driving. Driving a motor vehicle is a privilege not a right and it comes with great responsibility to act within the rules laid down when you pass your test. When you deliberately ignore those rules you put yourself and other people at great risk as can be seen in this terrible collision. Our thoughts remain with the families of both victims who have been left devastated by this tragic incident.”

The families of both victims were both in court for the hearing − they were supported by family liaison officers from Cheshire Police.

The families issued a joint statement following the sentencing:

“There are no winners in this case, only losers. Both families have lost our mothers and grandmothers in the most tragic yet preventable circumstances while Michael Gilligan (a young man) has lost a significant proportion of his life as he begins his lengthy prison sentence. Both of these wonderful ladies are irreplaceable to their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, taken from us in an instant. No sentence will reflect the pain and devastation felt by both families. Not one day passes where we don′t think of this collision, which sadly took the lives of two ladies who were enjoying their retirement that they had worked so hard for.”
