Police have issued CCTV footage after a police patrol car was attacked with paving slabs and baseball bats.

The attack happened at around 12.35am on Sunday 7 July 2013, when officers on patrol in North Reddish attempted to stop a stolen Audi A6 on Windmill Lane.

A number of men wearing balaclavas got out of the stolen car and attacked the police vehicle with paving slabs and baseball bats, causing extensive damage.

The officers were not injured during the attack.

The men then got back into the car and drove off. It was later found abandoned on High Bank in Denton.

Chief Inspector Mark Dexter from GMP’s Road Policing Unit said: “The CCTV clearly shows one of the men jumping out of the car and heaving a paving slab at the windscreen, while others attack the car from the side with baseball bats.

“Thankfully none of the officers were injured during this attack, although this could easily have been a very different story. The attack highlights again the dangers that officers face and the levels of violence that criminals are prepared to use to secure their escape.

“We are determined to catch those responsible. If you have any information about this incident, or if you know who the man in the CCTV footage is, please get in touch as your information could be vital to our investigation.

“Following the attack, the car sped off from Windmill Lane, so we are also interested to hear from anyone who saw the vehicle prior to it being dumped in Denton.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police officers looking for wanted Michael Cope have increased the reward on offer to £25,000.

Cope, 28, is sought in connection with the murder of mother-of-two Linzi Ashton, who was found at her home on Westbourne Road, Winton by relatives shortly before 6pm on Saturday 29 June 2013.

The independent charity Crimestoppers had initially offered a £5,000 reward for anyone who has information leading to the arrest and conviction of Michael Cope.

Greater Manchester Police has now added £20,000 to the available reward, as officers continue to work with the community in the hunt to find him.

While Cope is from Salford, he has also been known to visit the Leigh area, in and around the town centre.

Chief Superintendent Kevin Mulligan said: “It has now been almost ten days since Linzi’s murder and it is vital we find and speak to Michael Cope to assist our investigation.

“Understandably, her family are absolutely shattered by what has happened to her, and we are committed to giving them the answers that they need.

“We hope that the increase in the reward will encourage people who may not have felt able to come forward beforehand to approach us now.

“While our appeal to the public continues, we would also like to make it clear that Cope is dangerous and should not be approached.

“We do not want the public to be overly alarmed, but we have had some information which suggests that Cope has access to a firearm.

“I want to reassure the community that we still have a significant police presence in the area which is supported by armed officers.

“A dedicated team of detectives are continuing their enquiries to locate Cope.”

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 0161 856 5092 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Since Cope was identified as a suspect, more than 30 addresses have been searched, leaflets have been dropped in different parts of Salford and searches for clues have been taking place in public land around the Worsley and Leigh Road areas.

Detectives believe Cope was last seen at The Moorings, near to the Bridgewater Canal, at about 9am on Saturday 29 June.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is to investigate if police knew whether there was a danger to any of the lives of three men and if they should have issued them with warnings before one was killed.

The independent IPCC investigation will look at whether between 23 January 2010 and 9 February 2010 Greater Manchester Police, and or Cheshire Police and the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) knew or should have known whether there was a real and immediate risk to the life of Stephen Akinyemi, Philip Atkinson or Arran Coghlan. Mr Akinyemi died on 9 February 2010.

The IPCC investigation will also look at what steps, if any, the forces should have taken to protect the lives of the three men, including whether an ‘Osman warning’, which warns the recipient of a threat to life, should have been issued to any of the three men.

IPCC Commissioner Mary Cunneen said: “Our investigation will determine whether police were in possession of intelligence to suggest that the lives of Mr Akinyemi, Mr Atkinson or Mr Coghlan were in danger and whether action should have been taken to protect them before Mr Akinyemi died.”

Police in south Liverpool are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a disturbance in a busy street late last night (Thursday, July 11, 2013).

Officers were called to Lark Lane in Aigburth at 11.40pm following reports from several members of the public of a disturbance taking place in the street.

Patrols arrived within minutes and found a man aged in his 20s with a bloodied nose and several minor cuts to his face. A second patrol also attended and a man aged in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of affray. A search of the area was made to try and identify anyone else who may have been involved but no-one else was found.

A large part of Lark Lane was cordoned off to allow a full forensic examination this morning and currently the road remains closed to motorists and pedestrians between Hesketh Street and Little Parkfield Road.

Detectives are making extensive enquiries to establish how many people were involved in the altercation and if anyone else was assaulted.

Detective Sergeant Sarah Clayton from Admiral Street CID, said: “We are still working hard to establish how many people were involved in this disturbance, who was involved and if anyone was seriously injured. We would urge anyone who was assaulted and suffered any injury to please come forward.

“This incident happened in a busy street where many people will have been enjoying the warm weather by having a drink outside various pubs and bars. Understandably local residents and businesses will be shocked about what they saw as this kind of trouble is rare here. I would like those people who did witness something that could help us get to the bottom of this to please get in touch, in confidence if need be.

“We are working hard to carry out all the neccessary forensic enquiries in the roads affected so that the cordon can be lifted as soon as possible and I would like to thank local businesses and residents who have been disrupted today for their patience and cooperation.”

Man jailed for burglary following his escape from prison

A man has been jailed after pleading guilty to absconding prison, robbery, burglary and attempted burglary offences.

Sean Berger (13/08/1982) of Old Trafford was jailed for 15 years today Friday 12 July 2013 at Minshull Street Crown Court.

On 17 December 2012, Sean Berger escaped from Kirkham prison where he was serving a sentence for robbery offences.

The following day at around 12.45pm on 18 December 2012, a 47-year-old woman was upstairs in her Seymour Grove home in Stretford, when she heard a loud bang downstairs. She made her way to the landing area and was confronted.

She was threatened with a knife, that had been taken from her kitchen, and money and jewellery was demanded. When the victim said she did not have any, she was attacked. She was punched and kicked to the face and her head was knocked against the bedroom wall before her house was searched.

Jewellery worth a substantial amount of money was taken.

Police are still investigating who was responsible for the woman⿿s injuries.

At around 4pm the same day, Berger smashed the window of a house on Great Stone road, Stretford causing the homeowner to run out. Nothing was taken.

One hour later, Berger targeted a home on Kenwood Road, Stretford where the patio doors were smashed and the house was searched.

The 56-year-old owner arrived home and noticed her lights were on. As she walked inside, she saw Berger walking down the stairs and challenged him before he ran out with money, jewellery, a watch and cufflinks. Berger had left a claw hammer on her bed upstairs.

Police Constable Steve Phillips based at Altrincham Police Station said: “The offenders launched a horrific attack on a defenceless woman, knocking two of her teeth out and causing a nasty eye injury. Thankfully, she has recovered from her injuries but she is still affected to this day by the incident.

“I would like to reassure the public that incidents with this level of violence are very few and far between and we are determined to find out who is responsible for this. I would ask anyone with information to come forward.

“Berger was caught after we matched up forensic evidence linking him to the address of the robbery and two burglaries.

“He thought he would be able to get away with stealing and lining his own pockets with other people⿿s possessions. Berger now has plenty of time to think about the misery he has brought upon these innocent victims.”

“First of all, on behalf of everyone at Greater Manchester Police, I would like to again extend my deepest sympathies to all of Lee’s family for the loss they have suffered and pay tribute to the courage and dignity they have shown over the past few months.

“Fusilier Lee Rigby was a serving soldier but he was also a local lad and I would like to thank all those people in our communities who came to pay their respects and ensure Lee’s funeral was a respectful and dignified occasion befitting a young man who lost his life serving with Her Majesty’s Armed Forces.

“Lee’s family have publicly spoken about how the country has united since Lee’s death and I would like to pay particular tribute to the people of Rochdale, Bury and Middleton for the impeccable way they have shown their support for Lee and his family. They have done themselves proud.

Videos:Man jailed for life for murder of student from Manchester

A man has today been jailed for life for the brutal attack and murder of a student from Manchester.

Imran Akhtar Hussain (born 10/3/86), of Tilehurst Lane, Bracknell, Berkshire has today, Friday 12 July 2013, been sentenced at Manchester Crown Court, Crown Square to life in prison and ordered to serve a minimum of 23 years before he can be considered for parole.

At about 1.30pm on 4 January 2013 a 38-year-old man was walking along Derby Road in Nottingham when he was approached by Hussain who punched him in the right side of his face.

The victim did not know Hussain and the attack was totally unprovoked. The punch left him shocked and in a lot of pain.

Hussain shouted obscenities towards his victim and ran up Arudel Street and got into his car and drove off.

Twelve days later, on Wednesday 16 January 2013 at about 2.15pm, 18-year-old Kieran Crump Raiswell was walking from his home address in Chorlton towards the city centre.

The purpose of this journey was to distribute CVs in order to find work before he headed off to university in September.

It is believed Kieran left home at about 1.45pm, he walked past the Tesco store on Upper Chorlton Road when Hussain drove past him.

Hussain turned left into Stamford Street a short distance ahead and parked his car and hid behind a bush

He waited for Kieran to pass him and approached him from behind. He plunged a knife into his back twice so hard that one of the wounds went straight through Kieran⿿s shoulder blade.

As Kieran turned around Hussain stabbed him two more times in the arm and chest. Kieran fell to the floor and Hussain ran back to his car and drove off.

A member of public called an ambulance and a passing Fire Service crew gave emergency first aid and resuscitation to Kieran.

He was taken to hospital where he sadly died from his injuries.

A murder investigation was launched and officers searched through hours of CCTV. From the footage it was clear Hussain had driven past Kieran a number of times in what would appear to be an attempt to find the right place to attack him.

The black ford KA Hussain was driving was tracked to a service station at Stafford services, where he used his debit card to withdraw cash. Officers were able to trace his name and address from this transaction.

On Sunday 20 January 2013 at about 4.20pm Hussain was arrested in the Coventry area on suspicion of murder.

Detective Chief Inspector Pete Marsh from GMPs Major Incident Team, said: “This was a premeditated unprovoked attack on an innocent young man who had his whole life ahead of him.

“Hussain and Kieran had not met before; Hussain came to Manchester with the sole intention of causing harm.

“He picked Kieran out of a crowd and followed him down Upper Chorlton Road, Hussain hid behind a bush and waited for Kieran to walk past before subjecting him to a savage attack.

“This was a cold blooded motiveless killing and it is clear from his actions that Hussain obviously has no regard for human life.

“He stabbed Kieran before leaving him collapsed on the floor fighting for his life.

“No sentence will ever be enough or can undo the needless loss of life, but I hope that today’s result will be of some small comfort to Kieran’s family and friends.”

Statement from Roland Crump and Christine Raiswell: “First, we would like to thank family, friends and the community for their unstinting support over recent months.

“We also want to thank the GMP Family Liaison Officers and Victim Support for the help and advice they have provided since Kieran was killed.

“Our heartfelt gratitude also goes to the police investigation team led by DCI Pete Marsh for their excellent work in investigating Kieran’s murder, and also to the Crown Prosecution Service and to Peter Wright QC for successfully prosecuting this case.

“At this time, it is important to remember Kieran as an outstanding young man about to embark on his adult life and we treasure the memory of our fantastic eldest son. We will always remember him.

“Kieran was walking into town on that Wednesday afternoon in January when Imran Hussain picked out our son and subjected him to a vicious attack that gave him no chance of defending himself.

“We believe this senseless murder has been justly punished. Equally, we believe Hussain should serve his sentence and not be considered for release until he no longer poses a threat to society.

“Thank you on behalf of all the members of our family.”

Chief Constable Sir Peter Fahy said “On behalf of Greater Manchester Police, and also personally, I want to apologise for the failings which led to the death of PC Ian Terry and express great sorrow for the pain and loss suffered by his family. We accept that there were failings in the way in which the training exercise was carried out and today we accept the sentence that has been passed.

“Ian Terry was a highly professional and dedicated officer and also a member of a very close and loving family, I know he is missed as much today as the day he died. I want to express our admiration for the dignity and love shown by his family over the many years it has taken for the case to get to this point.

“It has been just over five years since Ian Terry tragically died; five years that Ian’s family, friends and colleagues have had to wait for today’s outcome.

“Since Ian’s death we have introduced a number of rigorous measures to ensure that the risk to our officers on such training exercises is minimised and that their safety is our number one priority.”
